Angel’s Egg (John Jr’s Personal Interpretation)

What Is It?

I just found an old text file of probably a rough draft of a post that I used to have on my blog years ago back when my blog was on Windows Live Spaces, it is probably not the last (final) version.

This is an old rough draft from years ago, but at least I can save some of it by adding this back to my blog, even if it is outdated and poorly typed.

Several years ago, probably during one of my lonely depressive periods, I got the crazy idea/inspiration to type my own personal interpretation (if that is the correct word), of a Japanese anime (animated) film or original video animation (OVA) called Angel’s Egg by Mamoru Oshii and Yoshitaka Amano:

Angel’s Egg (Tenshi no Tamago) – English Subs

It (This) was probably my longest (most) time-consuming single personal writing project ever, and I worked on it non-stop until it was complete, and it took me several hours to type.

After typing it, I did not bother to go back to do much editing and I probably went to my grandfather’s house to check on him (get his mail, wash his dishes, give him his medicine, give him his food, talk with him, et cetera).

I decided to keep it in its mostly original state because it was a work of crazy creative energy that I can not replicate/copy/et cetera again; and to me, it is a work of art in its own way.

It is/was somewhat cryptic, vague, strange, confusing, mysterious, personal, poorly and oddly typed, hard to read, et cetera; but it will make more sense if read while and/or after watching the Angel’s Egg animated film (OVA).

Here is my own old weird crazy piece of written art/whatever, in all of its crazy poorly typed and hard to read and hard to understand and incomplete rough draft glory/craziness 😀 :

Angel’s Egg (John Jr’s Personal Interpretation)

The hands are Hers/Mine.

The hand is His/Mine.

The Bird In The Egg/My Subconscious sleeps/dreams/thinks in a Lonely Place/My Brain.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious stands looking/daydreaming/thinking at The Giant Machine/Part Of My Brain That Stores Memories as it lands in a Lonely Place/My Brain.

The Statues on The Giant Machine/Part Of My Brain That Stores Memories are parts of Myself/Memories From My Past.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“Who? Who Are You?”, but no one replies.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious awakes with an egg.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious protects the egg and keeps it close.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious stares out of a window, daydreaming/thinking.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious goes to collect Water/Illusions in bottles.

While looking at a lake of Water/Illusions, The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious starts to daydream/think of sinking in the Water/Illusions, a possible future.

During the journey, a wave of red machines/new thoughts/new beliefs/new ideas come passing by.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious leaves the wave that is passing by, stops, and stares at The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious runs, not knowing this/the stranger.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious escapes and starts to search for sustenance and a new bottle for collecting Water/Illusions.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious hears a bell while trying to put Water/Illusions in the new bottle at a fountain of Water/Illusions with statues of fishermen, and starts to run as the bell sounds.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious escapes and stops to replenish.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious finally sets the egg down and goes to stare at a body of Water/Illusions, while daydreaming/thinking.

On the way back to the egg, The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious sees The Man/Part Of My Conscious sitting and waiting.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious stands with the egg in hand and says:

“Keep Precious Things Inside You, Or You Will Lose Them.”, and hands over the egg.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious takes the egg, as the bell sounds once again.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“What Do You Think Is Inside That Egg?”.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious says:

“I Can’t Tell You Things Like That.”.

“Besides, I Don’t Even Know Who You Are.”.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious says:

“You Have To Break An Egg If You Are To Know What Is Inside.”.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious starts to run, but stops to ask:

“Who Are You?”, but no reply.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious walks off but is followed by The Man/Part Of My Conscious, and says:

“Don’t Follow Me!”, but no reply.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious and The Man/Part Of My Conscious continue to walk, but they stop to take a break.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious offers some Water/Illusions in a bottle to The Man/Part Of My Conscious, but it is refused and the walk continues.

While walking the statues of the fishermen run by, The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious says: “The Fish Have Come Out.”, and The Man/Part Of My Conscious says: “Fish?”, The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious says: “Even Though The Fish Are Not Anywhere, Still They Chase After Them.”.

The fishermen with harpoons are chasing the shadows of big fish.

The fishermen are just elements of a dream The Bird In The Egg/My Subconscious is dreaming.

They are being used to chase after what is thought to be real but is only shadows of reality, because this is a dream.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious and The Man/Part Of My Conscious walk to the ruins of a church, and The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious goes inside, but The Man/Part Of My Conscious stays outside.

The church ruins represent something that was mostly destroyed, but still survives in some form.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious is one form that survived, and has kept the egg close and protected it ever since.

This is verified when The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious looks in the window and sees a reflection that shows that they are connected.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious is all that is left from the ruins of the church.

After leaving the ruins of the church, The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious leads The Man/Part Of My Conscious to a special place, and says:

“Please, My Egg, Don’t Do Anything To It.”, and then says: “This Way.”.

Inside, The Man/Part Of My Conscious sees a tree that is carved in stone and says:

“I’ve Seen A Tree Like This Somewhere.”, and asks: “Where Was It?”, then answers: “So Long Ago That I’ve Forgotten.”.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious then says:

“Somewhere Under A Sky Where The Clouds Made Sounds As They Moved The Black Horizon Swelled And From It Grew A Huge Tree, It Sucked The Life From The Ground And Its Pulsing Branches Reached Up As If To Grasp For Something; The Giant Bird Sleeping Within The Egg.”.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“What Happened To The Bird? Where Is It?”.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious answers:

“It’s Still There Now, Still Dreaming.”.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“Dreaming? What Kind Of Dream Does The Bird Dream?”.

The Man/Part Of My Conscious answers/asks:

“What Is In The Egg? You Still Cannot Tell Me?”, but no response.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious then leads The Man/Part Of My Conscious up a long spiral stairway with many bottles filled with Water/Illusions.

There are bones/fossils of non-human animals on the walls that represents things from the past.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious stops to put down a new bottle filled with Water/Illusions, and The Man/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“Since When Have You Been Here?”, “As Many Days As There Are Bottles?”, then says: “I Too Have Forgotten Where I’m From, And Maybe I Didn’t Know From The Beginning Where I Am Going.”.

The Young Woman/Part Of My Conscious asks:

“Will You Be Going Away?”, but no response.

It starts to rain and The Man/Part Of My Conscious says:

“I Will Wipe From The Earth Man Whom I Have Created, Man And Beast, Crawling Creatures, And Birds Of The Air As Well; For I Regret That I Made Them”.

“I Will Send Rain On The Earth For Forty Days And Forty Nights, And I Will Wipe From The Ground Every Living Thing I Have Made.”.

“And After Seven Days The Waters Of The Flood Came Upon The Earth, On That Very Day All The Fountains Of The Great Deep Burst Forth, And The Floodgates Of The Heavens Were Opened.”.

“And Rain Fell On The Earth Forty Days And Forty Nights, But The Ark Floated On The Surface Of The Waters.”.

“All Flesh That Moved On The Earth Died; Birds, Cattle, Wild Animals, All Creatures That Creep On The Earth, And All Men.”.

“Only Noah And Those With Him In The Ark Were Left, Then He Sent A Dove To See If The Waters Had Abated From The Surface Of The Ground, And Then He Waited Another Seven Days, And Again Sent Forth The Dove From The Ark, But She Did Not Return To Him Anymore.”.

“Where Did The Bird Land?”.

“Or Maybe It Weakened And Was Swallowed By The Waters, No One Could Know, So The People Waited For Her Return; They Waited And Grew Tired Of Waiting.”.

“They Forgot They Had Released The Bird; Forgot There Was A Bird.”.

“They Even Forgot There Was A World Sunken Underwater.”.

“They Forgot Where They Were From; How Long They Traveled; And Where They Were Going.”.

“It Was So Long Ago That The Animals Have Turned To Stone.”.

“The Bird I Saw, I Can’t Even Remember Where Or When, It Was So Long Ago.”.

“Perhaps It Was A Dream.”.

“Maybe You And I And The Fish Exist Only In The Memory Of A Person Who Is Gone.”.

“Maybe No One Really Exists And It Is Only Raining Outside.”.

“Maybe The Bird Never Existed At All.”.

Among these, words from a modified/similar version of the story of Noah in the Christian Bible.

You see that The Man/Part Of My Conscious is showing doubt and is questioning existence, and seems to be affected/effected by this place of Water/Illusions and Bones/Fossils/Thing From The Past.

You also finally see that The Man is My Present Emerging Conscious, and The Young Woman is My Present Old Conscious.

Being My Present Emerging Conscious puts The Man in a position of being present, but not fully emerged yet, and so doubts and questions still remain.

Being My Present Old Conscious puts The Young Woman in a position of being present, but is stuck in the past, and is trapped in illusions.

A few moments later, The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious says:

“It Exists, It’s Here, It’s Here, It’s Here!”.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious leads The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious to the bones/fossils on a wall of a human-like creature with wings, and says:

“I Found It, It’s Already Turned To Stone, It’s In Here.”.

“I’m Going To Hatch It And Put It Back.”.

“It’s The Bird I Found.”.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious says:

“I Know That, …. I Thought So.”.

The plan of The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious is now clear to The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious.

It is clear that The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious is trapped mostly in the past and in illusions of the past, present, and future.

The egg is not The Bird In The Egg/My Subconscious or even the human-like creature with wings (which really is only something from the past); but the egg is actually just an illusion of things past, present, and future.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious has been trapped in these illusions and has been living in the past, and the plan to hatch the egg will fail, and the egg will never hatch.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious knows the only way to truly emerge and free The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious from the illusions, is to destroy the egg.

But doing so will probably mean the end/death of The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious hoped that it would not come to that and wanted to find a way to prevent that, but sadly/unfortunately was not able to find another way/a way to prevent that.

Later in a bedroom, The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious sits on the floor and asks:

“Can you hear something?”.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious sits on the floor listening to the egg and answers:

“I Can Hear It, The Sound Of Soft Breathing.”.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious says:

“That’s Your Breathing.”.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious says:

“I Can Hear The Sound Of Wings.  It Must Be Dreaming Of Flying In The Sky.”.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious says:

“That’s Just The Sound Of The Wind Outside.”.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious says:

“Very Soon, Right Now You’re In Here Dreaming, But Soon I Will Show You, Very Soon.”.

“So You Must Stay Here For Now, Here It Doesn’t Rain, Here It Is Warm.”.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious starts to fall asleep, and so The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious lays The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious in bed.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious then asks: “Who Are You?”, and The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious asks: “Who Are You?”, and The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious falls asleep with the egg nearby.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious sits on the floor knowing what needs to be done and waits in sadness for a while, and then takes the egg and crushes it; and then leaves.

Later, The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious awakes/awakens/wakes up and screams in shock and terror after seeing the crushed egg on the floor.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious runs outside and sees The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious in the distance, and starts to chase/run after The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious falls off of a cliff.

The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious sees a body of water while falling and falls into it, and sinks to the end/death.

Out of the mouth of The Young Woman/My Present Old Conscious several eggs float to the surface, showing the release of the illusions, and a flood starts to wash away some of the places once traveled.

Further out near a beach and a sea, The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious watches as The Giant Machine/Part Of My Brain That Stores Memories rises into the air carrying Statues/Parts Of Myself/Memories From My Past.

A statue of The Young Woman/My Former Present Old Conscious is now on The Giant Machine/Part Of My Brain That Stores Memories, being carried away as well.

The Man/My Present Emerging Conscious stands there watching as The Giant Machine/Part Of My Brain That Stores Memories continues to rise higher and higher and higher as it becomes clear that this is only one island in the vastness of the planet that is My Brain / My Mind.

The End,

  • John Jr 🙂
