What Is It?
The 2007 Japanese anime (animated) TV show Darker Than Black (Season 1) & the 2008 special side episode Darker Than Black: Beneath Cherry Blossoms In Full Bloom.
Here is how Wikipedia describes this show:
Darker than Black is a 2007 Japanese anime series created by Tensai Okamura. Set in modern Japan, the narrative focuses on how ten years prior to the events of the series, a mysterious spatial anomaly known as “Heaven’s Gate” appeared in South America, shortly followed by the opening of “Hell’s Gate” in Tokyo altering the sky and wreaking havoc on the landscape. During this time, people possessing various special abilities emerged, each capable of different supernatural feats—these are known as contractors. The series follows the exploits of agents Hei and his comrades of the Syndicate organization operating in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo and their mission to uncover the mysteries of the Hell’s Gate.
Here is how MyAnimeList describes the special episode:
A side-story of Darker than Black, also called Episode 26, that takes place during the events of Kuro no Keiyakusha.
The Syndicate has another job for Hei and his team. This assignment involves the sought after possessions of a dead contractor, which are believed to have been buried beneath a cherry tree. Meanwhile, Misaki Kirihara and her team plan a trip to the Cherry Blossom festival.

I am surprised that I had not heard of this anime before my female coworker MR recommended it to me, thank you, MR, for the recommendation.
I definitely would have enjoyed this anime more if I had originally seen it back when it came out.
This anime somewhat reminds me of several anime at times like: Ghost In The Shell: Stand Alone Complex, Cowboy Bebop, et cetera.
While this anime is not as good as those anime, it has that somewhat older style animation & music & mood at times that I like in some of those anime classics like that, and there were a few brief times when the visuals & music came together to form beautiful standout classic moments.
Unfortunately, this anime was convoluted with poorly named terminology & it never properly explained important details, even after 25 episodes & 1 special episode, leaving my brother GC & I confused & constantly wondering about some of the most basic things, which hurt the experience for us.
I liked this show a little more than GC did.
This show would have been a nice addition to Toonami back in the day, it is the type of show that would help fill a time slot, with each episode giving you a little something new & familiar without the need to have seen all the other episodes first.
I recommend watching this show at least once, even with it flaws, it might not be better than some of the classics, but it will bring back a little nostalgia.
