The Fountain Review

What Is It?

The 2006 American epic magical realism romantic drama movie The Fountain.

The Fountain

This is how The IMDb describes this movie:

As a modern-day scientist, Tommy is struggling with mortality, desperately searching for the medical breakthrough that will save the life of his cancer-stricken wife, Izzi.

Three stories – one each from the past, present, and future – about men in pursuit of eternity with their love. A conquistador in Mayan country searches for the tree of life to free his captive queen; a medical researcher, working with various trees, looks for a cure that will save his dying wife; a space traveler, traveling with an aged tree encapsulated within a bubble, moves toward a dying star that’s wrapped in a nebula; he seeks eternity with his love. The stories intersect and parallel; the quests fail and succeed. —jhailey@hotmail.com

My Thoughts

I saw this movie once years ago, I can not remember if I saw it at the house of my former male classmate DH or not, I saw it at someone’s house or dorm or apartment.

I have a vague memory of a location, my memory is so unclear that I am not sure if it was a location in the movie, or if it was the location where I watched the movie.

I can not remember how many other people were there, but I do know that one other person was there for sure.

My memory of this movie is unclear, I think that I found it to be a little slow & not mainstream, but part of it connected with me during some of its exploration of philosophy / emotions / relationships / life / death / loss / grief / spirituality / history / et cetera.

I know that some of the visuals & surreal parts were unique & interesting, like the space traveler scenes, and how it jumped between time periods.

It probably left me having to come up with my own interpretation & meaning / message / et cetera.

The end,
