Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others

Source: Amazon

What is it?

The 2018 book Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others by Karla Starr.

What is it about?

This is how Goodreads describes this book:

“I don’t know when I’ve been so wowed by a new author”
-Chip Health, co-author of The Power of Moments and Switch

A talented journalist reveals the hidden patterns behind what we call “luck” — and shows us how we can all improve outcomes despite life’s inevitable randomness.

“Do you believe in luck?” is a polarizing question, one you might ask on a first date.

Some of us believe that we make our own luck.

Others see inequality everywhere and think that everyone’s fate is at the whim of the cosmos.

Karla Starr has a third answer: unlucky, “random” outcomes have predictable effects on our behavior that often make us act in self-defeating ways without even realizing it.

In this groundbreaking book, Starr traces wealth, health, and happiness back to subconscious neurological processes, blind cultural assumptions, and tiny details you’re in the habit of overlooking.

Each chapter reveals how we can cultivate personal strengths to overcome life’s unlucky patterns.

For instance:

Everyone has free access to that magic productivity app–motivation.

The problem?

It isn’t evenly distributed.

What lucky accidents of history explain patterns behind why certain groups of people are more motivated in some situations than others?

If you look like an underperforming employee, your resume can’t override the gut-level assumptions that a potential boss will make from your LinkedIn photo.

How can we make sure that someone’s first impression is favorable?

Just as people use irrelevant traits to make assumptions about your intelligence, kindness, and trustworthiness, we also make inaccurate snap judgments.

How do these judgments affect our interactions, and what should we assume about others to maximize our odds of having lucky encounters?

We don’t always realize when the world’s invisible biases work to our advantage or recognize how much of a role we play in our own lack of luck.

By ending the guessing game about how luck works, Starr allows you to improve your fortunes while expending minimal effort.

Final Thoughts

I was working one Saturday in December 2018 at my job at The BP Library at the very end of the work day when a book flew off the shelf from being on display in the beginning of the adult non-fiction section after I had already passed by on my way back to the shelving room because it was about time to go.

I was confused by how this book had flown / flew off the shelf like that, I picked the book up and it was the book Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others (which I did not bother even looking at the title of at the time), and I put the book back on display when I noticed the book next to it on display which was the book Mastering Fear: A Navy SEAL’s Guide.

The book Mastering Fear: A Navy SEAL’s Guide caught my attention even though it was not the book that flew from the self, I did not even bother looking at the title for that book, and I decided to check out Mastering Fear: A Navy SEAL’s Guide because the topic seemed like something that could help me and the other book flying from the shelf was almost like a sign.

My female coworker JB checked the book Mastering Fear: A Navy SEAL’s Guide out for me at the front desk, I told her about how the other book had flew off the shelf but it was the book on display next to it that caught my attention, and she suggested that I go back and get the book that flew off the shelf like it was some kind of sign (which was the book Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others) so I did.

I checked out both books, I finished reading the book Eye that my male coworker Mr. JF let me borrow, then I read the book Mastering Fear: A Navy SEAL’s Guide, and then I read the book Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others.

This book Can You Learn To Be Lucky?: Why Some People Seem To Win More Often Than Others started as an easy read and it covered more topics in relation to luck than I had expected, which was nice and it reminded me of a more entertaining Sociology lecture from my college days when my favorite college professor Mrs. C taught the Sociology classes that I attended, but near the end this book got a bit repetitive and it felt like it was padded out a bit to make it a bit longer than it should have been.

Even with it becoming more difficult to read at the end, it was still a short book, and overall it was still a pretty easy read with some helpful mentions of some scientific research along with some helpful life advice.

This book basically gives you some life advice that anyone can apply to their lives to increase their luck / chances et cetera in life, and Ms. Starr added a bit of her own personality and style to it.

I am glad that I read this book too like my coworker JB suggested, and so thank you JB for the advice.

The end,

What is it?

The 2015 book Blessed: A Trip Through Belize by the author Moment Johnson.

What is it about?

This is how Goodreads describes this book:

Blessed tells the story of the author’s seven month journey through Belize.

A simple tale of islands and jungles.

Discovery and kindness.

Reflection and contemplation.

A mixture of the Belizean lifestyle, internal discoveries, profound insights, and poetic glances of nature.

Everything comes together in this story in perfect harmony.

With no real purpose or plan, Moment sets out to discover a different way of life.

Opportunities appear at every corner, and what may seem like a setback at first glance truly becomes a blessing in [disguise].

Her quest leads her to spending seven weeks in solitude on forty acres in the Belizean rainforest.

Step inside the author’s mind and experience a slice of Belizean paradise as she experienced it.

Final Thoughts

I probably finished reading this book two months ago, I wanted to do a more thorough post about this book because I felt that it deserved it, but recently I have stalled on most of my non-dream posts like this so now I am trying to just keep these posts shorter so that I can get myself back to finishing them again. 😀

I think that Moment did a good job making it feel like you were almost in her mind in a way, reading this book made me feel like a hidden passenger on her journey, one who also had access to some of her inner thoughts which made this book a more intimate experience.

During the times that I read this book it made me feel closer to Moment, like we had recently communicated online and / or like I had recently read one of her blog posts, and so even when she did not blog for a while it did not seem like it because I was still reading about her journey in this book so she did not feel absent during those times.

So well done Moment, and congratulations. 🙂

The end,

Selling A Back Pendant On Amazon?

I woke up to use the bathroom several times remember part of one or more dreams each time, but I went back to sleep each time without voice recording my dreams so I lost most of my dreams unfortunately.

Dream 1

One of those dreams possibly involved the television show Jessica Jones (Season 2), Jessica Jones, Alisa Jones, superpowers, et cetera but I can not remember.

Dream 2

This dream was probably inspired by me buying the SQUARE ORGONE PENDANT – AMETHYST, SELENITE, ROSE QUARTZ by OrgoneVibes on sale before going to sleep and me telling Moment about it:

This dream involved me being inside maybe a slightly fictional version of my parent’s house, and something strange happened where I possibly put either the idea of a pendant for sale on Amazon or I put the pendant on sale thinking that no one would buy it; and so this was an experiment.

In the dream I called it a back pendant I think, it was a normal pendant that you wore normally in the front so I have no idea why I possibly called it a back pendant, and it was a black chunk of some kind of material that was magnetic and could possibly be used as a compass in an emergency.

It was probably an old pendant that I had bought and did not want anymore, and to my surprise someone bought it or the idea of it.

To my surprise this person was my former male classmate JC, and I remember trying to figure out how was I going to send it to him et cetera.

But that is all that I can remember of this dream.

Jessica Dolcourt | Natalie Tran | Hillary Clinton

I got less than three hours of sleep last night after staying up late trying to pick mobile phone cases for my family for our Nokia Lumia 635 mobile phones that I ordered and we had to wake up early to take my brothers KD and TD to the dentist in the city of LC, unfortunately I saw no cases that met military specifications or any good cases for this phone, only cheaper lower quality cases.

So I got a E-Time Armor hybrid case with a built-in kickstand for everyone that came with the case, a holster/cover with a swivel belt clip, a stylus pen, and a screen protector for $5.99 plus shipping and handling on Amazon.com; I am not expecting much, but hopefully they will last a few years.

Dream 1

Amazingly I do barely remember part of three dream fragments with the first dream fragment involving mobile phones again, mobile phone cases mostly probably, and maybe one or more CNET mobile phone reviewers like Jessica Dolcourt were in the dream as well; but that is all that I can remember of this dream fragment.

Dream 2

The second dream fragment involved Natalie Tran from YouTube or a woman who looked like/reminded me of her, I was in the dream as well and maybe some other people were in the dream as well, and I know that Natalie / the woman and I talked and I remember her using one of the phrases/whatever that she likes to use sometimes: “Unbelievable.”.

We probably knew each other some how, but that is all that I can remember of this dream fragment.

Dream 3

The third dream fragment involved Hillary Clinton, but that is all that I can remember of this dream fragment.

The end,
