Cosmopolis (Film)

Source: IMDb

What is it?

The 2012 Canadian-French-Italian-Portuguese drama-thriller film Cosmopolis that was written and directed and produced by David Cronenberg and stars Robert PattinsonPaul GiamattiSamantha MortonSarah GadonMathieu AmalricJuliette BinocheJay Baruchel and Kevin Durand; and was based on the book Cosmopolis by the author Don DeLillo.

What is it about?

Here is how the Metacritic describes this movie:

Unfolding in a single cataclysmic day, the story follows Eric Packer – a 28-year old financial whiz kid and billionaire asset manager – as he heads out in his tricked-out stretch limo to get a haircut from his father’s old barber, while remotely wagering his company’s massive fortune on a bet against the Chinese Yuan.

Packer’s luxe trip across the city quickly becomes dizzyingly hellish as he encounters explosive city riots, a parade of provocative visitors, and is thrust into a myriad of intimate encounters.

Having started the day with everything, believing he is the future, Packer’s perfectly ordered, doubt-free world is about to implode. (Entertainment One)

Final Thoughts

Every single video review of this movie that I saw on YouTube so far was negative, every reviewer that I saw did not like this movie or understand this movie, and most of them felt that it was pretentious and pointless and slow and boring and that it did not make sense to them at all.

I seem to be one of the few people who did not hate this movie (but I did not like the character Elise Packer (Elise Shifrin) and how that character was acted) and I seem to be one of the few people who could somewhat understand this movie and who probably somewhat liked this movie, I thought that this movie was different and philosophical, and I was able to relate to it and understand it more than any of the critics that I saw so far.

I watched this movie a few years ago alone at night when I was in a philosophical and thinking mood and when I was at a certain point in my life and when this movie felt relevant at the time, maybe that made a difference, and so maybe this movie is better watched under those conditions.

I was probably able to relate to this movie more because I think a lot and when I am alone I sometimes think out-loud especially at night which is when I often do my best and deepest and most philosophical thinking, the flow and dialogue of this movie is like that, and so this movie and the flow of this movie and the dialogue between characters is like listening to people thinking out-loud to each other very philosophically on various topics in a way that is not common in most movies or real life.

Example:

So this movie will probably be harder to relate to and understand for some people, especially if you do not like philosophy, and if you are someone who does not do a lot of thinking (especially deeper thought) on various topics.

The dialogue can get confusing and complex and random at times because it flows more like people thinking philosophical thoughts out-loud, even I could not make much sense of some of it, but that is how things are in real-life with our own thoughts at times because sometimes our thoughts make sense and sometimes they do not and they can flow randomly and fast at times like some of the dialogue in this movie.

The main character Eric Packer (played by Robert Pattinson) (who has bodyguards) is basically slowly going through the city having philosophical conversations with various people he meets on his way to get a haircut (there is more that happens of course), which will probably bore some people, but if you are in the mood for something like this you can consider watching this movie at least once.
