What is it?

The 2003 book First Meetings In The Enderverse by the author Orson Scott Card.

What is it about?

This is how Wikipedia describes the short stories in this book:

The stories in this book are:

  • “The Polish Boy” (2002) – Tells the story of how Jan Paweł Wieczorek (Ender’s father) as a small child gets tested by the International Fleet and convinces them to get his family out of Poland.

  • “Teacher’s Pest” (2003) (Not present in 2002 version of book) – Tells the story of how John Paul Wiggin (Ender’s father) meets and falls in love with his future wife.

  • Ender’s Game” (1977) – First appeared in the August 1977 issue of Analog magazine and was later expanded into the novel Ender’s Game.

Although the foundation of the Ender’s Game series, the short story is not properly part of the Ender’s Gameuniverse, as there are many discrepancies in continuity.

  • “Investment Counselor” (1999) – Tells the story of how Ender Wiggin first met the artificial intelligence Jane and became a speaker for the dead.

It first appeared in the anthology Far Horizons edited by Robert Silverberg.

Final Thoughts

Years ago I bought this book for a $1 from Dollar Tree when I noticed it when walking by the book section.

I could be wrong but I think that I was trying to find something to read before or after a hurricane hit the city of D.

The electricity at my parent’s house ended up being out for two weeks if I am correct about which hurricane took place at that time, if any.

I remember reading this book very fast, I remember liking it, and I remember wishing that it was longer because I was enjoying it.

I probably especially liked the short stories Teacher’s Pest (which had some interesting relationship / romance building) and Investment Counselor (which had several interesting concepts like the occupation Speaker For The Dead).

The end,
