I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream (Short Story)

I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream – Harlan Ellison (audiobook)

What Is It?

The video above is an audiobook version of the 1967 post-apocalyptic science fiction horror short story I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison.

I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream – The End of the Apocalypse – Extra Sci Fi

This is how Wikipedia describes this short story:

In a dystopian future, the Cold War has degenerated into a brutal world war between the United States, the Soviet Union, and China, who have each built an “Allied Mastercomputer” (or AM) to manage their weapons and troops. One of the AMs eventually acquires self-awareness and, after assimilating the other two AMs, takes control of the conflict, giving way to a vast genocide operation that almost completely ends mankind. 109 years later, AM has left only four men and one woman alive and keeps them in captivity within an endless underground housing complex, the only habitable place left on Earth. AM derives its sole semblance of pleasure from torturing the group. To disallow the humans from escaping its torment, AM has rendered the humans virtually immortal and unable to commit suicide.

The machines are each referred to as “AM”, which originally stood for “Allied Mastercomputer”, but was changed to “Adaptive Manipulator” and later (after gaining sentience) “Aggressive Menace”. It finally refers to itself as purely “AM”, referring to the phrase “I think, therefore I am.”

I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream – The End Of The Apocalypse – Extra Sci Fi

Yesterday the YouTube channel Extra Credits had a video about a post-apocalyptic science fiction short story by Harlan Ellison called I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, which is an amazing title, and the video was called I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream – The End Of The Apocalypse – Extra Sci Fi:

The title of that short story caught my attention immediately, there is something about it that I find pretty amazing and poetic and symbolic et cetera, and now I want to read this short story one day.

The 1985 book / collection of short stories called Eye by Frank Herbert.

What is it about?

This is how Goodreads describes this book:

The only collection of the best stories of Frank Herbert, Award Winning author of the legendary Dune saga!

Eye features the startlingly original collaboration The Road To Dune a walking tour of Arakeen narrated by Frank Herbert and illustrated by acclaimed British artist Jim Burns.

Also included is an introduction by Herbert describing his personal feelings about the filming of David Lynch’s movie version of Dune; Herbert’s own favorite short story, Seed Stock and tales from throughout his career, some never before collected.

Final Thoughts

This book of short stories by Frank Herbert was surprisingly hard to read, it was my hardest read in recent memory, and so it took me longer to read than it should have and than expected.

The short stories were a bit hard to follow, especially the one with a lot of navy lingo, and most ended suddenly and felt incomplete.

I think that Frank Herbert’s style does not work so well in short story form, but he still manages to add some deep content in these short stories if you can translate them or understand them et cetera; I would like to see longer versions of some of these short stories because I think that most of them needed to be longer.

I would like to thank my coworker Mr. JF for letting me borrow this book and the other book that I still have to read.

A European Hitman Sniper?

File:Hitman Sniper.png
Source: Wikipedia

This dream from last night was possibly partly inspired by a short film and Vimeo Staff Pick that I saw a few days ago called Jakkals13 (Jakkals 13):

Unfortunately I can not remember most of this dream because a complex set of circumstances slowly destroyed my memory of this dream because this dream probably had at least one dream within a dream and/or daydream within a dream, it was possibly partly a false awakening dream so in the dream or one of the dreams I falsely thought that I was awake and that I was in the process of typing my dreams, my mind was distracted by other things in the real world and in the dream, and I did not get as much sleep as I would have liked.

In the dream or dreams, there were possibly several dreams going on at the same time because there was at least one dream within a dream and/or daydream within a dream, I remember seeing and hearing something about a man with whitish-color skin with maybe short brown hair who seemed to be a hitman/assassin/whatever from maybe Europe (European).

The man had a sniper rifle and it looked like he was probably doing and/or finishing one or more contract killings during the dream and he seemed to be a sniper like that was his preferred method of killing people, I possibly heard about him and saw some scenes and video clips of him, and maybe I was even in one of the scenes/parts of the dream that he was in but I am not sure.

I think that I was in a dream, the hitman was probably in a dream within a dream and/or daydream that I was able to see from the first dream, and I possibly was partly connected to a dream/daydream where I thought that I was awake where I was trying to type details about my dream within a dream (or I was partly connected to the real world).

I felt that the dream within a dream was more interesting than the first dream that I was still in so I was going to focus on typing the dream within a dream first, I remember finding something with two paragraphs written on it, and both paragraphs were about the hitman and the second paragraph was possibly written/typed by him but I am not sure.

The first paragraph was about the hitman’s life story (it was a short overview of his life) and the second paragraph was a short story that was either written by him and/or it was about him, so the first paragraph was non-fiction, and the second paragraph was fiction.

I decided to edit both paragraphs because I was going to blend them with my post about my dreams that I was typing, so I was blending parts of the dream within a dream with first paragraph, and I was mostly leaving the second paragraph alone because it was a short fiction story.

After that I was going to type about the first dream that I was still in, it was like I was in three different places at one time in this dream, physically I was probably only in one dream (the first dream) but my mind seemed connected to three dreams or two dreams and a daydream/dream or two dreams and the real world at the same time.

Because I partly thought that I was really typing this in real life my mind slowly started to forget/erase the details of these dreams/daydreams as I typed them, I was more than halfway finished editing and typing my post when I finally woke up in the real world, and so by then most of my memory of these dreams was destroyed/erased.

Unfortunately everything that I edited and typed was lost in the dream world when I finally woke up in the real world, that was supposed to be my post for today, too bad we can not bring things physically from dreams because that post was almost finished. 😀
