“Criminal” is a song by American recording artist Fiona Apple, the third single from her debut studio album, Tidal.

The single was shipped to radio on June 2, 1997, and was physically released in September.

Apple has stated that the song is about “feeling bad for getting something so easily by using your sexuality”.[3]

Apple’s highest-charting single, it peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100 (her only entry to date), as well as No. 4 on the Billboard Modern Rock Tracks.

The song won the Grammy Award for Best Female Rock Vocal Performance at the 40th Grammy Awards and was nominated for Best Rock Song.

“Criminal” was listed at No. 55 on VH1’s “100 Greatest Songs of the ’90s”,[4] and No. 71 on Blender magazine’s 2005 list of “The 500 Greatest Songs Since You Were Born”.[3]

Music Video

The song’s music video was directed by Mark Romanek in May 1997 with cinematography by Harris Savides.

It was released a month later in June 1997.

Visual enhancements including the retroreflector in Fiona’s eyes and additional lighting vignettes were created by visualist Ash Beck.

The video features Apple sulking in various states of undress, and The New Yorker described her as “looking like an underfed Calvin Klein model”,[5] known as the “heroin chic” look.

It explores themes of voyeurism and adolescence.[6]

In 1998, the video won an MTV Video Music Award for Best Cinematography.

The video was featured in the 1997 MTV special “Beavis and Butt-Head Do Thanksgiving”.[7]

Up until Beavis and Butt-Head’s revival in 2011, it was the last to be critiqued by the duo, along with Marilyn Manson’s “Long Hard Road Out of Hell” video, which was also featured in the special.[7]

Babysitting Criminals?

All that I can remember of this dream is that I was in sitting in a corner of a room in a building with my mom, maybe my dad or another man who was sleeping, and two male criminals.

For reasons unknown & that I can not remember, I seemed to be temporarily in charge of making sure that the two criminals did not escape.

Basically, I seemed to be babysitting two criminals, I did not seem to be law enforcement, and I had no weapons et cetera.

Dream 1

I am at a park at night with family, we are going to camp out there, we hear strange sounds & then voices like maybe a girl’s voice who needs helped followed by maybe an adult male voice talking to her along with the strangeness, it was not clear if the voices were really people or not, or something trying to mimic human voices while making other sounds.

My brothers TDC & KDC & I go to investigate, I tell them to each bring a stick to defend ourselves just in case, the area where the sounds were coming from was some land surrounded by the paved walking trail, there was maybe some light, but there were various obstacles in the way with raised areas & lower areas preventing us from seeing anything from the trail.

All that I can remember of the end of this dream is that I was returning to what looked like a building combined with The E House, my family and I seemed to live there in this dream, and I entered in the building part first.

A large man with light-color skin wearing metal armor entered the building as a threat to maybe rob it and maybe some other crimes, basically a criminal, but then a larger Bane-like man wearing even bigger metal armor entered the building as a threat.
